Allergy-Free Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies

There is nothing more addicting than this well-known Chex treat known as muddy buddies or puppy chow.

I've always called it Puppy Chow, but when my kids were toddlers they got a little confused. Miles called it "dog bones" and Graham called it "dog food". Maybe you should stick with "Muddy Buddies".

I remember eating this by the cup fulls during high school musical practices, and it's definitely a crowd pleaser even when it's made allergy-safe.

This is an easy snack that can be made quickly, without heating your oven and has so many possibilities for allergy-free.

I make this dairy-free with safe butter and chocolate chips.

To make it peanut-free, use your favorite nut or seed butter.

To make it soy-free, use soy-free margarine.

If you need to corn-free, I believe you can find corn-free powdered sugar.

And this can be gluten-free when you use Rice Chex Cereal.

So as you can see, many allergies can be accommodated and avoided with this recipe! And it's too easy not to try.

Here is a healthier version of Puppy Chow if you're interested! It's omits the powdered sugar and has a healthier coating.

9 cup Chex Cereal
1 cup chocolate chips (Enjoy Life Chips)
1/2 cup peanut butter or sunbutter or nut butter
1/4 cup dairy-free margarine butter
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Melt on low/medium heat chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a large pot on the stove. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Pour cereal into the chocolate mixture and stir gently until cereal is completely coated.

Pour powdered sugar in bowl with the chocolatey cereal and toss again gently until fully coated.

Spread mixture evenly on wax paper and allow to cool.

Store in an airtight container if there is any leftover.  ;)

OMG I am too excited! I've gotta try this. Funny that they call it dog food! I caught my little guy eating dog food at my brother's house last night! My neice got the bag and helped me check the label. It was ok, but jeez... this kid moves too fast!
